CONSIGNOR HIGHLIGHT
Tyler McCormack // Box Dot Horses
Tyler and Barbara Jayne McCormack, the duo behind Box Dot Quarter Horses, carry forward traditions while shaping a future in the horse world.
The McCormack Ranch, situated near Brothers, OR, stands as a testament to generations of dedication to ranching. Tyler and Barbara Jayne McCormack, the duo behind Box Dot Quarter Horses, embody this legacy as they carry forward traditions while shaping a future in the horse world. They live and work on the McCormack ranch with their extended family, where they raise, train, and use their horses to complete the day-to-day chores that come along with the operation.
A Heritage of Horsemanship
Tyler is part of the 4th generation to grow up on the family ranch in Brothers, Oregon. “From the time I could sit in a saddle, horses have been a huge part of my life. I developed a love and passion for not just horses but raising livestock at a young age." Reflecting on his formative years, he credits Keith Lankister, a key figure during his childhood, for shaping his approach to horsemanship. "Keith had a gift for understanding horses and was extremely talented at getting horses started in a way that I had not seen before. His style and ability to understand the horses he worked with really has stuck with me and laid the foundation that I still use today to start and train our colts."
"I grew up in Dallas, Oregon and got into horses at a young age. I competed and showed horses most of my childhood in almost every discipline you can think of,” recalls Barbara Jayne. Her diverse background in disciplines ranging from Dressage to Barrel Racing laid the groundwork for her future aspirations. "Where I kept my horses growing up was also a breeding facility and that was the start of my dream to one day breed and raise horses."
Their paths converged at Oregon State University. "When I met Barbara at Oregon State University, I was blown away by her knowledge in so many equine disciplines that I had not been around in my childhood," Tyler recalls. Their shared passion for horses, coupled with their distinct backgrounds, became the cornerstone of the Box Dot breeding program. It has allowed them to raise horses that not only excel on the ranch but can go on to be successful in so many other disciplines.

The Box Dot Program
Shortly after getting married in 2015, they started the Box Dot program. "The Box Dot brand has a very special meaning to us as it was Tyler's Great Grandfather's Brand, Hugh Robertson (and who our son is named after)," Barbara Jayne shares. "Tyler's grandfather gifted Tyler both the Box Dot brand for horses and cattle when he graduated from college, and he started his own cattle herd."
At the heart of the Box Dot program lies a steadfast commitment to quality and versatility. Through meticulous selection of bloodlines and crosses, Tyler and Barbara Jayne aim to produce horses that embody the best of both worlds — the strength and resilience of foundation lineage coupled with the agility and finesse of modern performance lines. “We like to cross a mix of older foundation lineage including a lot of influence from Doc Bar, Nu Cash, and Peppy San Badger with more modern Cutting, Reining or Reined Cow horse lines.” Their stallions, Lean On This Cat and Wimpys Just Smokin, serve as the foundation of their breeding program, siring offspring that possess not only the physical ability but also the intelligence and temperament necessary for success in a multitude of pursuits.
Consigning at the Ranchers Horse Sale
For Tyler and Barbara Jayne, consigning with the Ranchers Horse Sale is more than just a business transaction — it's a testament to shared values and a commitment to integrity, making it a natural fit for their program.
“The integrity and transparency of this sale is something we greatly admire and love about the sale. Ever since the first sale we consigned to in 2019 we have always felt so welcomed and appreciated. We feel so honored to be a part of this great sale and look forward to bringing a quality horse every year.” As they look towards the future, Tyler and Barbara Jayne remain steadfast in their dedication to preserving tradition, pursuing excellence, and raising up the next generation.

“We hope to continue to raise cattle and horses on the ranch with our children by our sides and for them to want to continue to take on this way of life in their future. But we know, no matter what path they take; the western way of life and a hard work ethic will take them far.”
A Vision for the Future
While they hope their children, Hugh, Bexley, and Leddy, will choose to follow in their footsteps, Tyler and Barbara Jayne understand that the essence of the Western way of life transcends occupation. Regardless of the paths their children choose, they strive to instill in them the values of integrity, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the land, livestock and horsemanship. “We hope to continue to raise cattle and horses on the ranch with our children by our sides and for them to want to continue to take on this way of life in their future. But we know, no matter what path they take; the western way of life and a hard work ethic will take them far.”
